Creating a Lion of Judah paper plate mask with your children, for homeschooling, church, or just for fun!. It is a fun and creative craft for kids, combining simple materials like a paper plate, yarn, markers, glue, craft paper, and scissors. And pair it with a memory verse and short kid friendly Bible study.
Here’s how to do it:
Materials Needed:
- White paper plates (1 per child, sturdy paper is best)
- Red, orange, and/or brown yarn
- Markers or paint (yellow, orange, brown, and black)
- Glue
- Craft paper (yellow, orange, brown, white, and black)
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Elastic band or yarn can be used
Steps:
1. Prepare the Paper Plate
- Take the paper plate and cut out eye holes to fit the child’s face. You can hold the plate up to the child’s face to mark the best spots for the eyes before cutting.
- If you want the mask to be worn, punch holes on either side of the plate, near the edge, to attach an elastic band later.
2. Color the Plate
- Use the paint or markers to color the paper plate, creating a base for your lion’s face. You can blend the colors to give it a more dynamic look.
3. Create the Mane
- Cut lengths of yarn for the lion’s mane. These should be long enough to create a full and bushy mane around the edge of the paper plate. 3 to 4 inches long.
- Apply glue generously around the outer edge of the paper plate.
- Stick the yarn pieces around the plate, alternating between colors to create a mixed-color mane. Allow some of the yarn pieces to overlap for a fuller look.
4. Make the Facial Features
- Cut out ear shapes from the craft paper. You can use orange paper for this. Glue these to the back of the paper plate so they stick up above the mane.
- Use white craft paper to cut out two circle “donuts” for the eyes, and draw pupils in the middle with a black marker. Glue these centered over the eye holes on the plate.
- Cut a small triangle from black craft paper for the nose and glue it in place.
- Use a black marker to draw a mouth and any additional details you like, such as whiskers or eyebrows.
5. Final Touches
- Once all the glue has dried, if you’ve decided to make the mask wearable, thread the elastic band or yarn through the holes on the sides and tie knots to secure it in place. Adjust the length of the elastic band so it fits comfortably around the child’s head.
6. Wear the Mask
- Your Lion of Judah mask is now ready to wear! Enjoy playing and pretending to be a lion with this fun and creative craft.
This craft not only allows for a fun activity but also encourages creativity and can be used to introduce children to the story of the Lion of Judah in a playful and engaging way.
Bible Verse: Revelation 5:5 (NKJV)
“But one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.’”
Small Bible Study for Kids
Use the below simple explanation and activity above to help kids understand the powerful symbolism of Jesus as the Lion of Judah and how it applies to their lives, providing comfort and encouragement in a way that’s easy for them to grasp.
What It Means:
This verse is like a small part of a big, adventurous story. Imagine a powerful lion, known as the “Lion of the tribe of Judah,” which is another name for Jesus. In this story, everyone is sad because no one can open a very important scroll. This scroll is like a secret book that has special messages inside it. But then, they find out that Jesus, the Lion, is strong and brave enough to open it.
Why It Is Important:
This verse shows us that Jesus is very powerful and brave, just like a lion. It tells us that He can do things that no one else can do. When we think of a lion, we think of its strength and courage. So, when Jesus is called the “Lion of Judah,” it means He is the strongest and bravest leader we could ever have. Judah was also one of the twelve tribes, which produced the greatest kings David and Solomon, as well as the Messiah, our savior.
How It Relates to Us:
Sometimes, we might feel scared or worried about something, like when we have a bad dream or a difficult day at school. This verse helps us remember that Jesus is strong and brave, and He is always with us to protect us and help us through tough times. Just like a lion protects its family, Jesus protects us. He is our greatest king, and nothing can stop Him.
