If Lucifer is Satan the devil, and if God is all-knowing, then God knew when He created Lucifer. That he would become Satan the devil, spreading evil, sin, pain, destruction, and death. So did God create Satan? Why did He do it?
This is a very troubling question many people have.
Lucifer, also known as Satan or the devil, is the main antagonist in the Bible. Described as a fallen angel who rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven. His fall from grace and his subsequent transformation into Satan is the result of his pride and power-hungry war against God. But his actions do not stop there. The Bible gives accounts of his evil deeds. They caused the fall of humankind to sin, and his attacks on them and Jesus.
The Origin of Satan
The origin of Lucifer is first mentioned in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament, where he is described as a former celestial being. “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!” (Isaiah 14:12). This passage is the first reference to Lucifer in the Bible, and it suggests that he was once a powerful and glorious being who lived in heaven.
Lucifer’s fall from grace is described in the next two verses, where he is said to have been cast out of heaven because of his pride. “For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High’” (Isaiah 14:13-14). This passage suggests that Lucifer’s pride and ambition led him to rebel against God and to attempt to take over heaven.
In the New Testament, Lucifer is referred to as Satan, which means “adversary” or “enemy.” He is described as the ruler of this world and is depicted as a deceiver who tempts people to sin.
Lucifer’s Fall to Satan
Lucifer’s fall is further described in the book of Revelation, where he is said to have been cast out of heaven along with a third of the angels. “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him” (Revelation 12:7-9).
Ezekiel 28:12-19 gives even more insight and details into the history of what happened: “You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and emerald. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.”
So it seems that the devil was NOT created by God. But he was created by God as Lucifer, a perfect being with free will who later then chose to rebel against God. And that it was Lucifer’s choices that created the devil and evil from himself.
