What does the Bible say about the return of Jesus? [When & How]

The second coming of Jesus Christ, also known as the greek word Parousia used in the New Testament, is a central belief in Christianity and is described in several passages in the New Testament. Most people have heard about this amazing event predicted, but don’t understand what does the Bible say about the return of Jesus.

What is the Second Coming of Jesus?

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ will return to earth one day. This event is known as the Second Coming, and it’s mentioned in various places throughout the Bible. It is described how Jesus will return as:

  1. Visibly to All (Revelation 1:7)
  2. With Great Glory (Matthew 16:27)
  3. Suddenly and Unexpectedly (Matthew 24:36, 42)
  4. With a Loud Command and Trumpet Call (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
  5. In the Sky (Matthew 24:30)
  6. He Won’t Touch the Ground (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
  7. With all the Angels (Matthew 25:31)
  8. The Sky Will Roll Back (Revelation 6:14)
  9. Every Knee Will Bow (Philippians 2:10)
  10. The Dead in Christ Will Rise (1 Thessalonians 4:15)
  11. Believers Gathered to Him (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
  12. A Time of Judgment (2 Timothy 4:1)

In fact, Jesus Himself spoke about His return in Matthew 24:30-31, where He says, “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

One of the key passages that describe the second coming of Jesus is found in the New Testament book of 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, which says, “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” Acts 1:9-11 confirms how He will return in the same way he ascended into heaven.

This event is considered to be one of the most significant events in human history, as it marks the end of the current age, the world as we know it, and the beginning of the eternal kingdom of God.

The second coming of Jesus is also significant because it is seen as the culmination of God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Throughout history, God has been working to bring about the restoration of His creation and to bring salvation to those who believe in Him. It is the climax of this plan, as it marks the time when God’s rule and reign will be fully established on the earth. It will be a time when all things will be made right and when God’s justice and mercy will be fully revealed.

When will Jesus return?

Many people wonder when Jesus will return, but the Bible tells us that no one knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36). However, we can know the signs of His coming, and Jesus Himself gave us some of these signs in Matthew 24. Some of these signs include false Christs, wars and rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes, and persecution of Christians.

As Christians, we believe that Jesus’ return is imminent and that we should be ready for His coming at any time. Not being like the foolish 5 virgins caught unprepared (Matthew 25:1-4). We base this belief on the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, which describe events leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus. We also believe that we should keep the Ten Commandments (Revelation 14:12), including the fourth commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy (Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:8-11; Leviticus 5:17; 2 Timothy 2:19; Revelation 7:2-3; Revelation 9:4), as a sign of our obedience to God (John 14:15; 1 John 5:1-3).

One of the reasons why Christians know that Jesus is coming back is because of the numerous prophetic passages in the Bible that predict His return. For example, the Old Testament book of Daniel predicts that the coming of the Messiah will be accompanied by signs and wonders, such as the sun being darkened, the moon not giving its light, and the stars falling from the sky. These predictions have been fulfilled in part, but they will be fully realized when Jesus returns.

But when is Jesus returning based on the prophecies given and which if any have already been fulfilled?
