Can we trust the Bible? [14 Reasons Why and a Study Guide]

Today, misinformation and propaganda fill the world everywhere you look.

Where can you find truth and answers?

For Christians, the Bible should be the foundation of our faith. It should be the source of truth for all of our questions about life. But can we trust the Bible?

How do we know the Bible is true?

The Bible is not just a book of stories or teachings; it’s the Word of God that transforms our lives and helps us understand His character and will (Romans 12:2).

It uniquely speaks to us and leads us deeper spiritually.

But to understand this you have to study it with an open mind. An open worldview. Look beyond preconceived notions.

The Bible is unique compared to other holy books. It has been preserved and passed down through the centuries with such accuracy. Unlike other religious texts, the Bible has undergone intense scrutiny. Scholars and experts have meticulously checked and verified its authenticity.

But some still only see it as a book. Nothing Divinely inspired.

What is different when you start to trust the Bible, is your belief and faith grow. Because God didn’t leave us without proof. There is proof in the Bible and in the world (Romans 1:20).

So before we list them… consider how these reasons are more than skin-deep accusations about Bible contradictions. But can be the very beginning of trust built on a mountain of evidence.

Some reasons we will discuss why you can trust the Bible:

  1. Divine inspiration
  2. Fulfilled prophecy and prophetic accuracy
  3. Historical accuracy
  4. Consistency
  5. Transcendent message
  6. Preservation
  7. Manuscript evidence
  8. Internal testimony
  9. Miracles
  10. The Testimony of Jesus
  11. Scientific foreknowledge
  12. Eyewitness accounts
  13. Changed societies and cultural impact
  14. Personal experience

14 Reasons We Can Trust the Bible

There are several reasons why Christians trust the Bible, believing that the Bible is true, inspired, reliable, God’s word, and preserved unchanged:

1. Divine Inspiration:

Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, meaning that God’s Holy Spirit guided the authors as they wrote the books (2 Timothy 3:16-17). This means that while men did write it, God inspired the men. And the men in their own words, wrote what God needed written down.

The Bible conveys God’s message to us through the writings of 40 different authors over approximately 1,400 years. Giving the historical account, with great consistency, the story of God’s plan for our salvation.

2. Fulfilled Prophecy and Prophetic Accuracy:

Over time, the Bible’s prophecies, including the coming of Jesus Christ, have found fulfillment. Daniel’s prophecies of kingdoms rising and falling in the order and method described (Daniel 7), and others such as the prophecy of the destruction of Babylon (Isaiah 13:19-22). Jesus alone fulfilled over 324 prophecies.

3. Historical Accuracy:

Archaeological evidence and other historical records have verified many historical accounts within the Bible. Including locations, historical people, and events. Such as the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem (Matthew 24:2), and the destruction of the city of Tyre (Ezekiel 26).

4. Consistency:

Despite being written by numerous authors over a period of several thousand years, the Bible is internally consistent in its teachings and message. It presents a unified message of God’s plan for humanity, as well as a consistent worldview and history of God’s people.

A good example of this is the 63,779 cross-references visualized in the Bible by Chris Harrison and Christoph Romhild.

But many people misunderstand what the Bible is, and what it is supposed to be. Or how Bible translations work. And claim it has contradictions and so can’t be the infallible Word of God.

But the Bible isn’t just prescriptive, it is descriptive of real people in history struggling with their relationship with God across a long time frame. So most “contradictions” can be explained if you look at the context.

5. Transcendent Message:

Millions of people throughout history have testified to the transformative power of the Bible in their lives. The Bible’s message transcends time and culture, speaking to people of all ages and backgrounds.

It accurately describes and explains many of life’s toughest questions. Why are we here, where will we be, and why things are how they are. The condition of the human race and why we struggle as we do.

6. Preservation:

The Bible has been meticulously preserved over the centuries, with copies of the original texts being carefully transcribed and passed down through generations of scribes. Scribes, in their meticulous hand-copying process, documented their practice of counting characters and words in each line. If it didn’t match the original, they would discard the copy and start over.

Nevertheless, the printing press in the fifteenth century aided in the preservation and distribution greatly.

7. Manuscript Evidence:

The Bible has more manuscript evidence than any other ancient document. This means that there are many copies of the original texts, which allows scholars to compare and verify the accuracy of the biblical text.

The Bible has WAY more verified ancient manuscripts than well-respected and accepted books like The Illiad and Odyssey by Homer. In fact over 29,800 to 2,474 manuscripts.

8. Internal Testimony:

The Bible itself claims to be the Word of God, with numerous passages declaring its divine origin and authority. Explaining the purpose of the Bible to speak to us. A God who speaks.

9. Miracles:

The Bible records many miraculous events, such as the parting of the Red Sea and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Both Christians and scientists have found evidence validating some of these miracles. Such as evidence and remains found of the Red Sea crossing, Noah’s ark, the judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, and many others.

Christians see these miracles as evidence of God’s power and authority, and as proof that the Bible is true and trustworthy.

10. The Testimony of Jesus:

Jesus Christ himself referred to the Old Testament as the Word of God, and his apostles later affirmed the authority of the New Testament. Jesus, Himself also fulfilled over 300 prophecies within the Bible, a mathematical impossibility except for the power of God.

11. Scientific Foreknowledge:

Although the Bible is not a science textbook, it contains accurate scientific statements that were ahead of their time. For example, the Bible describes the water cycle long before it was understood by science (Job 26:8, Job 36:27-28). The world is round, floating in space, and gravity (Isaiah 40:22, Job 26:7). The importance of hygiene and washing your hands (Leviticus 15:13), isolating sick people, and avoiding dead bodies. Earth’s core (Job 28:5). The importance of blood to live and blood contagions (Leviticus 17:11).

12. Eyewitness Accounts:

Eyewitnesses, who were followers of Jesus Christ, recorded firsthand accounts of his life, death, and resurrection in the New Testament. The number of eyewitnesses and the abundance of evidence far exceed what is required to establish scientific facts or meet the evidentiary standards in legal court cases.

13. Changed Societies and Cultural Impact:

The Bible has had a profound impact on societies throughout history, inspiring positive changes such as the abolition of slavery and the establishment of hospitals and schools. The Bible has had a profound impact on art, literature, music, and other aspects of culture throughout history.

Yes, the Bible has been and still is misused by some. But overall people acknowledge there is power in the Words. Which should be used for good.

14. Personal Experience:

The Bible is the only book that can accurately describe our condition, explaining some of the most difficult life questions. Why are we here, why do bad things happen, what is going to happen, and even explaining the personal difficulties an individual has with sin in their life.

Overall, Christians believe that the Bible is true, inspired, reliable, and God’s Word.

Preserved as unchanged.

True because of the combination of divine inspiration, fulfilled prophecy, historical accuracy, consistency, changed lives, and preservation.

Evidence the Bible is True

This scrutiny has confirmed the reliability of the text, as the vast majority of the original manuscripts, like the Dead Sea Scrolls, are in remarkable agreement. Scientists and scholars found a 99.5% purity rate in accuracy. Having hundreds of more manuscripts than other well-known writings like the Iliad of Homer, and being more accurate. The inaccuracies are minor details like grammar or non-important words for textual meaning.

The Bible also has a historical accuracy that sets it apart from all other religious texts. Archaeological and historical research has confirmed many of the events and people mentioned in the Bible. This historical accuracy gives us confidence in the trustworthiness of the Bible’s message and teachings.

In addition to its historical accuracy, the Bible also speaks to the deepest needs of the human heart. It addresses the questions that we all have. It explores questions about the meaning of life, the purpose of existence, and how we can experience peace and joy in a world that often overflows with pain and suffering. The Bible provides us with a message of hope, pointing us to the ultimate restoration of all things through Jesus Christ.

Another aspect of the Bible that sets it apart is how it speaks to us in a personal and relevant way. It is not just a book of teachings, but a living book that has the power to transform our lives. The Holy Spirit works through the Word of God to convict us of sin, encourage us in times of trouble, and bring us comfort and peace.

But you should never take anyone’s word alone as truth, not even ours. You should always study the Bible, test it, and confirm for yourself. Though, remember to do it with an open mind and pray for truth.
